Fitting to Your Space
Size is an important factor with any mirror purchase. You want the mirror to fit on your wall without running into or over other elements. You also want to ensure you can mount the mirror on your wall without problems.
In order to begin looking for your mirror, you first need to determine where and how you will hang it. This is often dictated by your wall surface. For example, drywall and paneling may require that you locate a stud or support beam for mounting. This is especially true with larger or heavy mirrors. Masonry screws or special mounting hardware may be required for stone, brick or tile surfaces. Once you understand where and how you will mount the mirror, you are ready to measure the space.
Take a tape measure and get vertical and horizontal dimensions for your mirror. If you are planning on a unique or odd shape you may want to take diagonal and other measurements as well. Measure between any obstacles or items on the wall. This would include power outlets, switches, wall-mounted lighting fixtures like sconces, molding, wainscoting, fireplaces, mantles, headboards, vanity counter tops and shelving. Subtract a few inches from each dimension to keep your mirror from running into other items. This is both a style and safety precaution. The dimensions you end up with are the maximum sizes for your mirror.
